It’s a Catch-22 that many college students will experience upon graduation: they see a job that they really want, but it requires years of experience. The only way to get such experience though is by working. Frustrated and trapped, you ignore the majority of job listings and settle for the ones that will accept you.
This can be a long, slow trudge and typically leads from hopping from one job to another as something better becomes available. Instead of all that stress, why not start at a sales job soon after graduating? Getting a no-experience job in sales is possible, and it’s actually a lot simpler than you think. As long as you’re patient and passionate, you’re on the right track.
To save yourself time, make sure to only look for and apply to entry-level sales jobs. There’s a lot of room for growth and development in a position like this, but it’s not just handed to you. You have to earn it over time and with good work. Speaking of work, what if you didn’t spend your four or more years at a college or university studying sales? You can still get involved in this field.
Chances are, no matter which major you chose, something you have learned relates to sales. Harness this and figure out how to make it an advantage. If you’re stumped, any past job experience or time at an internship can come in handy for proving to hiring managers that you can think on your feet, work as part of a team as necessary, and influence people.
Once you’re feeling good about that, research your target company and learn as much as possible. When you get to the interview, you want to ask the kinds of tailored, well-thought-out questions that will impress a hiring manager and prove that you can go the extra mile. Don’t hesitate to use LinkedIn to learn more about each employee’s individual professional achievements, and the company overall.
If you do have a LinkedIn account, use it. Network as much as possible. You never know whether your dad’s friend or college professor’s cousin can possibly help open the door to your first sales job. Of course, during this time, you may experience some rejections or you may not hear back from some companies. This happens. But if you really want a rewarding career in sales, just keep trying and eventually you’ll get an interview.
Once that finally does happen, make sure to project an air of relaxed confidence. Just because you have no prior sales experience doesn’t mean that you don’t deserve to be there. In fact, most sales jobs will train you so you’re ready to interact with customers and make the sale. If you go in with a winning attitude and a willingness to learn, you’re going to impress the hiring manager.
Whether you’ve just graduated or you’re going to this spring, if you’re getting nervous because you don’t already have a job lined up, consider one in sales.
